Our school profile
Ambitious learning with a personalised focus

At our college in Heilbronn, we guide students on their path to the Abitur – with space to grow and a clear outlook for the future. A wide range of subjects with a focus on STEM allows students to deepen their individual interests. They are supported by a strong coaching and tutoring programme that encourages personal development and academic confidence. The result is a learning environment where students can thrive with joy and self-belief.

Bilingualism
Everyday learning in German and English

Bilingual school day

At our college, German and English are equal everyday languages – both in the classroom and throughout the school community. Students learn in and communicate through both languages, giving them a strong command of each.

This bilingual environment helps them grow into confident, globally minded individuals who are open to different perspectives and cultures.

Native-speaking teachers

Our international teaching team brings together a variety of language backgrounds. Most of our teachers are native speakers of either German or English and use their language skills authentically in class and in daily interactions.

For us, bilingualism goes beyond technical fluency – it means being able to think, communicate and feel at ease in both languages.

Spanish and French

Students who are working toward the Abitur and haven’t yet studied a second foreign language can begin Spanish in year 11.

If your child already studied French as a binding elective subject in our secondary school, they can continue with French at college – either as a standard or advanced level subject.

Prior knowledge of French is not required for admission, as Spanish can be chosen as a new profile subject.

Broad choice of subjects
with a focus on STEM

Wide choice of subjects

Extensive range of subjects

At the Josef-Schwarz-Schule college, students shape their path to the Abitur according to their interests and strengths. Whether it’s computer science, economics or the natural sciences – our curriculum places a strong emphasis on STEM subjects, offering both academic depth and space for individual exploration.

In addition, students can choose to take up a new foreign language and further expand their language skills. This broad, flexible subject offering prepares them for the future – with a practical approach and personalised support.

Computer science

Thinking ahead

At Josef-Schwarz-Schule, computer science holds a prominent place in the curriculum – practical, ambitious and forward-looking.

We are one of the few schools in Baden-Württemberg to offer computer science as an advanced level subject. Our students acquire digital skills that go far beyond the basics.

Computer science

Advanced level subject

Students gain in-depth knowledge of programming, network systems, databases and software development. The focus lies on building complex systems, structured thinking and hands-on implementation. This subject is ideal for those looking to pursue studies or careers in technology and digital innovation.

Computer science

Project work

Students develop their own digital projects, often in teams and using agile methods such as SCRUM. They work with modern tools and programming languages in a realistic context. Alongside technical expertise, they learn to plan, communicate and lead – key skills for tomorrow’s digital world.

Economics

Advanced level subject

Because we at Josef-Schwarz-Schule aim to prepare our students for the world of tomorrow and their future careers, economics is one of our profile subjects in the upper secondary. Students learn to understand, shape and critically reflect on their economic actions as consumers, future employees or entrepreneurs.

Through simulations, business games, competitions, and excursions to regional companies, economic theories come to life. A special focus is placed on understanding international economic interrelations and global financial and goods markets.

Economics

Career readiness

We place great importance on preparing young people for their future careers and life paths, so career orientation becomes a stronger focus at the college. Students take part in university fairs, attend BeSt seminars (career and study guidance), and explore study options during special university days.

To foster entrepreneurial thinking, students have the opportunity to found their own student companies under expert guidance. They can also participate in the "Jugend gründet" competition, where they develop a business idea and bring it to life in a virtual company setting.

Natural sciences

Advanced level subjects

At our Heilbronn campus, six fully equipped science labs and one university-standard experimental lab are available for in-depth learning and hands-on research.

The experimental lab enables college students to conduct long-term experiments and independent research. This creates a strong link between academic studies and scientific practice – an ideal preparation for STEM-related university paths.

Natural sciences

Competitions

We regularly encourage our students to take part in science competitions. These opportunities allow them to deepen their interest in scientific subjects and apply their knowledge in real-world contexts.

Natural sciences

Cooperations and awards

Our state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and close collaboration with Experimenta – Germany’s largest science centre – make our strong focus on science particularly tangible.

For our commitment to STEM education, we have been officially recognised as a "MINT-freundliche Schule" (STEM-friendly school).

New foreign language

Spanish

From year 11, students at the college can take up a new foreign language: Spanish. Taught by experienced subject teachers, these lessons foster both linguistic ability and intercultural awareness.

As students have the option to begin a new foreign language, prior knowledge of French is not a requirement for admission to JSS college.

Cultural understanding

Language learning at Josef-Schwarz-Schule always goes hand in hand with cultural exploration. In today’s globalised world, this dual approach helps students prepare for international academic paths and global career opportunities.

What I really like about JSS college is that there are no limits when it comes to choosing subjects. I feel like they actually go out of their way to make more things possible.«

Tutor support

We support our students not only academically, but also personally throughout their individual learning journey. Each student is guided by a dedicated tutor or class teacher who serves as the main point of contact for both the student and their family. This consistent relationship builds trust and strengthens the connection between home and school.

To ensure high-quality support, our tutors are given dedicated time in their timetable for this important work.

School coaching

Our multi-professional school coaching team is available to support students throughout their time at college. Psychologists and social workers offer guidance with school-related challenges and personal development.

Support is confidential, solution-focused and built on mutual respect. It creates space for genuine personal growth – reflecting our holistic approach to education.
